(frequently asked questions)

Q1: Whom may I contact about this seminar?
A: "Scot Adams" ⟨adams@math.umn.edu

Q2: What if I'm interested in studying for the General GRE, not the Math Subject GRE?
A: There are many courses offered to help with general GRE preparation and a google search on this topic is pretty easy. For a course offered at UMN, click here.

Q3: Is the GRE Math Subject test offered at the University of Minnesota?
A: No, it isn't. You can find where it's offered by There you'll see that the list of centers in Minnesota is:
  • Bemidji, Bemidji State U
  • Duluth, U Minnesota
  • Mankato, Minnesota State U
  • Moorhead, Concordia Coll
  • Morris, U Minnesota
  • St Cloud, St Cloud State U
  • Winona, St Marys U

Q4: How much math do I need to know for the GRE Preparation seminar to be useful to me?
A: We expect all students taking the seminar to have seen all the basic information in a freshman (one-variable) calculus course.

Beyond that, there's no simple answer: The more you know the more you'll understand. I (the organizer, Scot Adams) do plan to make myself available to explain problems one-on-one to students who haven't yet seen some background material beyond freshman (one-variable) calculus.

Also, by the way, if, for example, you're taking second year (multivariable) calculus, it may happen that seeing some of the problems we cover can help motivate parts of what you're learning in that course.

Q5: Are there any online courses for the GRE Math Subject test?
A: There's at least one, at http://www.subjectmath.com/.

There are also at least two study groups at other universities:

There is also an extensive Q&A-style GRE prep guide developed by the Center for Online Education.
