************************************************************************* date: Mar 17, 2020, 11:30 AM subject: canvas communications, office hours, HW, class, exams Hi, I will send this message both the usual way, and by canvas. After that I will send email by canvas only. (At least, that's my plan right now. Please let me know if you have any trouble receiving this message through canvas.) -------------------------------------- I will have zoom office hours today at 1:30pm. Look for an email invitation to join a zoom meeting a few minutes before 1:30pm. I just spent about 30 minutes working by zoom with Levi, and it's not quite as good as in person, but we were able to communicate very well. It was *much* better than yesterday, because I now have an iPad that I can use. -------------------------------------- Homework is due tomorrow (Wednesday the 18th) at noon. No pictures, scans only. Please upload your scans to canvas, and let me know if you encounter any difficulties. If you're already done writing up your HW, please upload today, so that I can find out as soon as possible if there are problems with the system. pI plan to have the next homework set due on Wednesday, the 25th. I'll assign the problems this Thursday the 19th, in class, using zoom. I expect to assign homework on Tuesday the 24th. It will be due on Tuesday the 31st. After that, we'll be on the original schedule. -------------------------------------- I will plan to have class, on time (9:05am-11am), on Thursday the 19th, by zoom. You should each receive an invitation to join a meeting at a little before 9:05am, and I will try to proceed, as usual, through my handwritten notes. I will try to monitor the chat for questions. I have placed a lot of notes (probably for more than one class) under Thursday's date on the diary. Point to https://www-users.math.umn.edu/~adams005/MATH4604/diaryMATH4604.html and scroll down to "WEEK 08: THURSDAY LECTURE", where you'll see "handwritten class notes first set" and "handwritten class notes second set". As usual, I'll try to get the notes typed up and posted soon after I deliver the lecture. -------------------------------------- The second midterm will be delayed at least until 1 April, at which point we'll reassess whether meetings are possible. I'm *expecting* that I'll end up canceling the second midterm, and that the final exam will be taken at home, and that you'll be able to use whatever materials you want during the three-hour period of the exam. It depends, though, on how things develop. -------------------------------------- Many thanks for your patience. - Scot ************************************************************************* date: Mar 16, 2020, 1:19 PM subject: zoom and HW Sophia and our grader, Oliver, were able to join me by zoom a few minutes ago, but mostly all we could do was communicate by audio -- I did share my three screens and they could see that, but I haven't yet seen any work from a student, shared by them. Baby steps. Maybe tomorrow I'll be able to do more. If one of you could get an image of HW (or even just a handwriting sample), and can join a meeting at 1:30pm tomorrow, then I want to make sure that I can see something written by you. Please *scan* your homework (no pictures) into a pdf file and upload that pdf to canvas. Please do not deliver the homework in person. Of course, please let me know right away if you have any trouble with that. HW due date is delayed until Wednesday at noon. If there's a lot of difficulty, I may extend the due date again. For the HW that was due last week: It's been graded. I'll scan the graded homework and send it back to each of you by separate email messages. Hopefully I won't have to do any more scanning of HW. I appreciate your patience as we go through this process. - Scot ************************************************************************* date: Mar 11, 2020, 1:28 PM subject: Online teaching of MATH 4604 Hello everyone in MATH 4604, I'll be in touch soon with information about how our course will change with the new guidelines about online teaching. I hope to get back to you by the end of this week. I understand that we will NOT have class on Tuesday 17 March, so that gives me a little more time to plan the transition. There is homework due on the 17th. Please do NOT email it to me, unless I request it later. I'll address how to handle HW when I write again. I hope you are enjoying your break, in spite of all the concerns. - Scot ************************************************************************* date: Mar 2, 2020, 8:26 AM subject: Typos in HW#5-5 Hi, There were two typos in HW#5-5. Twice I wrote "W". Both times I meant to write "X". The problem is now fixed, but you may need to refresh your browser and / or clear cache to see the corrected version. Sorry for the confusion this may have caused. - Scot ************************************************************************* date: Jan 27, 2020, 3:33 PM subject: Office hours on W 5 Feb canceled Hi, I'm canceling my office hours on Wednesday 5 February. (That's more than a week from now. I'll have regular office hours this coming Wednesday, 27 January.) I'll be busy after about 10am on Wednesday the 5th, but could meet with students between 9am and 10am. Let me know if you want to make an appointment. - Scot *************************************************************************
