Prerequisites: Honors student and permission of University Honors Program. Credit will not be granted if credit has been received for: MATH 1271, MATH 1281, MATH 1371, MATH 1471.

Textbook: George Simmons: Calculus with Analytic Geometry (2nd edition)

Syllabus: Math 1571H is an honors calculus class for students with a strong background in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. We will apply the techniques of differential/integral calculus to find solutions to various problems in math, other sciences and engineering. The emphasis will be on problem solving rather than theory.

Exams: There will be three midterms on October 3 (Friday), November 5 (Wednesday) and December 3 (Wednesday), and a COMPREHENSIVE FINAL exam on Friday, Decmeber 12, 1:30 p.m.- 4:30 p.m. Notes, books, or graphing calculators will not be permitted for exams, but you may use a basic scientific calculator for computational purposes. Please bring your student ID to the exam. If you have any problem with the grading of your exam, you must bring it to my attention immediately (the same day the tests are returned)! Otherwise, I'll not be able to make any changes.

Sample Exam Final Problems (from last years Math 1571H class). The Final Exam will cover the Sections 1.5 - 1.7, 2.2 - 2.6, 3.1 - 3.6, 4.1 - 4.6, 5.2 - 5.4, 6.2 - 6.7, 7.2 - 7.7, 8.1 - 8.4, 9.1 - 9.4. I will go over these sample problems on Wednesday (12/10) in class. The final exam is scheduled on FRIDAY, DECEMBER 12, 1.30 - 4.30pm, TATE LAB of PHYSICS, ROOM 210.

Homework & Quizzes: There will be a weekly homework assignments. The homework will normally be due the following week on Thursday, in your discussion section. Please check the course website for the list of homework problems and due dates. You are expected to try all the assigned problems, though the TA will grade a selected set of problems. You may collaborate on the homework problems, but you must write your own solutions. If you have questions about the homework, it is best to ask during my office hours. No late homework will be accepted (unless prior arrangement is made). Any questions about homework grading should be first addressed to the teaching assistant. There will be a few quizzes held during the discussion section.

Grading: Homework & Quizzes - 100 points (20%), Midterm 1 - 75 points (15%), Midterm 2 - 75 points (15%), Midterm 3 - 75 points (15%), Final Exam - 175 points (35%). If your cumulative score is at least 450 points (90%) you are guaranteed an A, if your score is at least 375 (75%) you are guaranteed a B-, and if your score is at least 300 (60%) you are guaranteed a C- for the class. In order for you to succeed in this course make sure you read the textbook, do the homework assignments, listen to the lecture, attend your discussion section, and ask questions if there is anything you don't understand.

Academic integrity: Cheating of any kind will not be tolerated! Cheating on the exams will result in an "F" grade for the entire semester. Cheating includes bringing notes into exams, glancing at neighbors exams and copying the homework of a fellow student. Any appearance of cheating will be reported to the Dean of Students office. Students will be responsible for the policy of University of Minnesota concerning academic honesty.

Class conduct: Students are responsible for everything that is announced or discussed in class. You are expected to attend all lectures. Students who miss lectures will find it very difficult to succeed on the examinations. Late arrivals or early departures are disruptive and distracting and should be avoided. Please refrain from talking during class; it is disruptive to your fellow students and to me.
