Course Outline: This is an introductory course on abstract algebra. We plan to cover the basic ideas of modern algebra. The topics in this course will include the basics of group, ring and field theory.

Grading: The course grade will be based on weekly homework assignments, two in-class midterm and a comprehensive take-home final, with the following weights:
40% Homework
30% = 15% + 15% Two Midterms (Wednesday, October 9th, and Friday, November 8th)
30% Final Exam (Due on Thursday, December 19th)
Exams: There will be two in class midterms on Wednesday, October 9th, and Friday, November 8th, and a comprehensive take home final examination, due on Thursday, December 19th. The exams worth 15% + 15% + 30% = 60% of the final course grade.

The Midterm Exam I will cover the Chapters 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
The Midterm Exam II will cover the Chapters 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15

Homework: There will be 10 homework assignments in this course, each worth 8 points. Homework will be a fundamental part of this course, and will be worth 80 points (40% of the course grade). Most of the homework problems will be from the class textbook, but I will be also assigning some additional homework problems. Please make sure to check the course website regularly for assignments and exams. The first homework assignment will be due on 09/18 at 11.15am. The grader will pick up the homework after the class. This means that NO LATE HOMEWORK CAN BE ACCEPTED. You may work together on homework, but everyone must turn in their own written solutions. Please staple your homework before handing it in.
