Stack Attack

Student Topology Seminar, 10/19/11

Abstract: The ideas that lead to the study of algebraic stacks appeared in the 1960's and 1970's as an extension of the concept of schemes. Rather than attempt to unpack the definition of a stack, we aim to attack this complicated notion by examining specific examples. We begin by investigating orbifolds and highlighting their "stacky" qualities. We then go on to look at other useful examples of stacks.
