Text, Lecture, Office Hours:

Linear Algebra and Its Applications (4th Edition), by Gilbert Strang.
Lecture (004): MWF 12:20--01:10pm, Vincent Hall 211
Office hours: Monday and Wednesday 13:20-14:20

Course Description:

This is a second, advanced course in Linear Algebra, which assumes the student has already masterd a one
semester course in the subject. In this course, systems of linear equations, Gaussian elimination, determinants,
vector spaces, linear independence, basis and dimension will be only briefly reviewed.

New topics will include the Cramer's rule, the row, column spaces, linear transformations, inner product,
orthogonality, the Gram-Schmidt algorithm, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, diagonalization, hermitian matrices,
the singular value decomposition, quadratic forms, positive definite matrices, and the Jordan canonical forms.
The lectures follow the text fairly closely.

Homework, Exams, Final Exam:

Homework will be assigned Five Times. Total is 10 % of the final grade.

In class, Two Small Exams on Fridays: 02/21 and 04/17; one Midterm on Friday, 03/20; and one Final Exam.

Review Days before Exams: 02/19; 03/16; 03/18; 04/15; 05/01 and 05/04.

Two Small Exams cost 20% each, but only one of them goes to the final grade; One Midterm costs 30 %; and
The Final costs 40 % of the final grade.

For the final grade, we calculate H+S+M+F=10+20+30+40=100. The final grade will be curved in this class.

Final Exam: Tuesday, May 12, 2020, at Vincent Hall 211, from 10:30am to 12:30pm.
