I believe this photograph was taken by Bob Sine in the early 1970s. It is cropped from a larger picture containing Charlie and his son John. If you look carefully, you can see the edge of John's ear on the left side of the picture.

I received the photo from Charlie's widow, Kit Conley, after Charlie's death. She granted permission for the image to be used in the memorial volume of Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems published in 1988.
