Text: Single Variable Calculus by J. Stewart
[3rd edition]. We will cover the following material:
-
Review and Preview (preview of calculus; review material as needed)
-
Chapter 1 (limits and rates of change)
-
Chapter 2 (derivatives)
-
Chapter 3 (inverse functions; logarithmic and exponential functions)
-
Chapter 4 (the mean value theorem and curve sketching)
Prerequisite: Math 1151 (Precalculus II) or an equivalent
course, with a grade of C or better.
Required work:
-
Three midterm tests (given in recitation sections)
Makeup tests are given only in exceptional circumstances such as serious
illness or a major family emergency. A makeup test will not be given if
you don't notify us promptly.
[Leave a message on my Voice Mail (625-1076) if you can't reach me
or your TA.]
-
A comprehensive final exam.
-
Homework problems will be assigned and collected.
You must show your work to receive credit for the problems that
we check.
Dates of tests and final exam:
-
Test #1: Thursday, January 22
-
Test #2: Thursday, February 5
-
Test #3: Thursday, March 5
-
Final exam: Monday, March 16, 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM (room to be announced.)
Grades are based on a scale of 600 points, as follows:
-
The final exam counts for 300 points.
-
Each midterm test counts for 100 points.
-
Homework will count for 100 points.
-
The lowest midterm test grade will be dropped, or the homework grade will
be dropped if it is lower than the test grades.
-
A grade of Incomplete (I) can be considered only if you have a grade of
C or better based on midterm tests and homework. Any request for an incomplete
must be made before the final exam. Anyone who misses the final exam without
having made such an arrangement will receive a grade of F.
Calculators: You will find it useful to have either
a scientific calculator or a graphing calculator. Some assigned problems
require the use of a calculator. The text includes a number of interesting
things that can be done with a graphing calculator, but we will spend relatively
little time on those activities in class. You will be allowed to use calculators
on the tests, and I will try to design the test questions in a way that
will not give undue advantage to people who are using a particular type
of calculator.
