Syllabus
- This is the second semester of the undergraduate honors algebra sequence. We will cover modules over a ring and particularly the structure theorem for finitely generated modules over a pid. We will also study linear algebra and discuss the Jordan canonical form and rational canonical form for linear maps from a finite dimensional vector space to itself. We will also study field theory and Galois theory.
The text again is Herstein's "Topics in Algebra (2nd edition), Wiley and Sons, ISBN 047010901. The grades will be based on classwork and homework (20%); one take-home exam (15%); in-class mid-semester exam (25%) and the final (40%). Please note that these percentages are NOT the same as last semester's.
