Summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU's)

1. Nationwide programs: The REU program sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) allows strong undergraduate math majors to spend 4 - 6 weeks at a university in the US as part of a program involving learning and short term research projects. There is a stipend that will cover your traveling and living expenses (and maybe more - I'm not sure). From everything I've heard from students who have participated, it is usually an exciting experience for those with with strong mathematical interests. You also get a chance to meet students from other parts of the country. The NSF web site for these programs is

http://www.nsf.gov/home/crssprgm/reu/reu98dms.htm

I counted over 30 programs listed and more may be added, so check regularly. My advice is to pick a few that interest you (contact the people running it if you are not sure about your background) and apply early.

2. U of M: The mathematics department here at the U will also have an REU program. This program is not just for U of M students. For more information see the web page at

or send an email to

garrett@math.umn.edu

BE WARNED! Each program accepts only a small number of students, so apply soon and to several programs
