Math 5615H Honors: Introduction to Analysis I
Fall 2020
Section 001, MWF 12:20-01:10, remote, via Zoom

COURSE SYLLABUS

INSTRUCTOR: Sasha Voronov

E-MAIL ADDRESS: voronov@umn.edu. You are welcome to use e-mail to send questions to me.

CLASS WEB PAGE: All class announcements and assignments will be posted on the class homepage http://www-users.math.umn.edu/~voronov/5615-20 and NOT announced in class. Canvas will be used for posting your current scores and grades.

OFFICE HOURS (tentative): Wed 1:25-2:15, Thu 2:30-3:20, Fri 10:10-11:00, or by appointment.

TEXTBOOK:  Principles of Mathematics Analysis, 3rd edition, 1976, by Walter Rudin. This text is often referred to as "baby Rudin." Available for purchase at the bookstore and online elsewhere.

HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE:  All class meetings will be happening online, via Zoom. You will need a desktop computer with a camera and microphone or earphones, a laptop, or a tablet (such as an iPad) to participate. You also need to download the Zoom app. See https://it.umn.edu/services-technologies/how-tos/zoom-login-your-umn-zoom-account for detailed instructions. Calculators will not be needed.

GOALS: This is the first course of "analysis with proofs." The goal of the course is to learn real mathematics by providing rigorous foundation to topics most of which you have seen in freshman Calculus.

COVERAGE (tentative): Chapters 1-5 of the text.

PREREQUISITES: Calculus I-IV and Math 3283W or a similar proof-based course; or just Honors Calculus I-IV.

GETTING HELP:

CLASS PARTICIPATION: will be encouraged and assessed via a simplified system. You get 1 point for any of the following in-class activities: asking a question related to the material we study, pointing out a math error in what I am telling you, answering a math question I ask (always explain your answer: yes or no answers are no good). There is a cap of getting 1 point per class. I will be posting your scores on Canvas after each class.

HOMEWORK: Homework will be assigned and collected. Homework will be due before each Friday class, except the first week of classes, the Thanksgiving week, and the test weeks. A random selection of problems will be graded. Late homework will be assessed a penalty. Also note that selected homework problems (or similar) may be given on tests. That is another reason why you should do homework during the week, rather than just before the homework is due and, moreover, remember the ideas and techniques used in your solutions. Getting together with other students (that is, in study groups) is a very efficient way to do homework, see also GETTING HELP above. However, everyone should work on every problem; a solution you get together with other students should be written down in your own words. Copying someone else's solution will be penalized.

MIDTERM EXAMS: There will be two take-home midterm exams, due 1:10 p.m. Friday, October 16, and Friday, December 11. All tests are open-book, open-notes exams. Group work on exams is not allowed and will be penalized, if noticed. Late exams will be assessed a penalty.

FINAL EXAM: The take-home final exam will be due Saturday, December 19, 3:30 p.m. It will be an open-book, open-notes exam. Group work is not allowed and will be penalized, if noticed. Late exams will be assessed a penalty.

MAKE-UP TESTS: There will be no make-up tests.

GRADING POLICY: Grades will be assigned on a curve, using the following weights:

ALL POLICIES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE: Due to the experimental nature of remote teaching, I reserve the right to change any policies and adjust them to this unusual teaching environment. I will try to minimize such adjustments, though.

IMPORTANT DATES: The deadline to change your grading scale between A-F and S/N is September 21. The last day to drop the course without college approval is November 16; if you drop the course on or before September 21, no mention of this course will appear on your transcripts. Otherwise, you will receive a "W" for the course.

Syllabus created on 09/09/2020; Office hours changed and a cap of 2 points for class participation imposed on 09/09. A cap of 1 point imposed on 09/11.
