Math 8211: News and Announcements

o11/13/03: I have added a few items to the topics list. Go and take a look!

o11/09/03: I have graded Problems 2, 4, 5, 6, 9, 11, and 13 from Problem Set 2. The mean on Problem Set 2 was 47.4, the median 54, the top score 68, out of 70.

o10/29/03: I have corrected a= b + ... to a + b + ... in Problem 7 of Problem Set 2. Thanks to Hazem Hamdan!

o10/17/03: The Problem Set 2 is posted. Go and check it out!

o10/10/03: The mean on Problem Set 1 was 40.25, the median 42, out of 50.

o10/09/03: I have finally started to write a list of topics for your talks. Unfortunately, most of them deal with commutative AND homological algebra, and are therefore more suitable for the second semester.

o10/07/03: I have to move my office hours down by half-an-hour this Wednesday, October 8, to 11:30-12:30 because of a dentist's appointment.

o09/30/03: Promised hint to Problem 2.23 from Eisenbud. It is a hint to the hint at the end of the textbook. Assume I is not prime, that is there are two elements f and g not in I, such that fg is in I. Then (I,f) = (a) for some a. Then I = a(I:a) = (a) (I:a). Show that this factors I in the product of ideals strictly larger than I (look where f and g are!) and deduce that I is principal.

o09/23/03: Skip FLT (Problem 2) from Problem Set 1. I have posted the second part of the problem set, see my comments on how to prove FLT there, if you are interested.

o09/22/03: I have permanently moved my Thursday office hours to 11-noon, because of a new schedule of departmental seminars.

o09/14/03: I have posted still other version of the first problem set, Part I. I rushed with posting the first one, while I was on the go in the morning. Sorry about the confusion.

o09/14/03: I have posted a corrected version of the first problem set, Part I. I am grateful to Javier Zuniga for pointing out an inaccuracy in Problem 6. Good for him:-)

o09/10/03: I have just posted Part I of the first problem set. I cannot include problems from Eisenbud at this moment, because I had to postpone typing this problem set till I get home and at home realized I had left Eisenbud in my office. I will be gone tomorrow morning for Cincinnati and add a few problems from Eisenbud around September 22-23.

o09/10/03: I have permanently moved my Wednesday office hours to 11-noon to accommodate the schedules of some of the students.

o09/08/03: I have to cancel the classes on Wednesday and Friday, September 17 and 19, because of a school in Spain.

o09/08/03: I have to cancel my office hours Thursday, September 11,  and Wednesday and Thursday, September 17 and 18, because of my being out of town at conferences.

o09/05/03: I have to cancel the class on Friday, September 12, because of a conference in Cincinnati. I will post homework for you to be busy with while I am away.

o09/02/03: I may be late for my office hours 2:30-3:30 pm Thursday, September 4, because of a meeting. I should be in my office at least by 3 pm, though. Sorry about the inconvenience.
