TEXT: Algebraic Geometry, 1st edition, 1977, by Robin Hartshorne. Available for purchase at the bookstore and online. There is also a hard copy on reserve at the Math Library. Another useful book is Vakil's The Rising Sea, free on the web.
CONTENT: In the Fall semester, we will cover the following topics: affine schemes, global schemes, cohomology (Čech and as a derived functor), differential forms, étale and smooth morphisms. This roughly corresponds to Chapters 2 and 3 of Hartshorne's textbook.
PREREQUISITE: Math 8202: General Algebra. Some familiarity with Commutative Algebra will be helpful.
GETTING HELP:
GRADING: Based on your homework. Class participation may be taken into account. Grades will be assigned on a curve. I expect you to put enough hard work to earn grades not lower than a B. The curve does not exclude the possibility of everybody getting A's, though, but this happens rather rarely.
IMPORTANT DATES:
September 6: First class meeting.
September 27: First homework due.
November 23-24: Thanksgiving Break.
December 13: Last class meeting.
Page created on 09/06/2017. Class time and place changed on 09/11/2017. Added that familiarity with Commutative Algebra would be a desirable prerequisite and changed office hours and the due date of the first homework and on 09/12/2017. Changed the due date of HW 1 again on 09/20/2017.
