Homework 2

Due Friday, October 9

The problem set is due at the beginning of class on Friday.

Reading: Text (Kirillov): Chapter 2 from Section 2.6 through the end and Section 3.1.

Problems from Chapter 2 (Section 2.8):     2.8-14. You may assume that πi(Sn) = 0 for i < n, a standard fact of Algebraic Topology, which follows from Sard's theorem.

Problems from Chapter 3 (Section 3.11):     3.1-2.

Problem D: Why are the exponential and logarithmic functions as given by power series exp(x) = 1 + x/1! + x2/2! + ... and log(1+x) = x/1 - x2/2 + ... of a real variable inverse functions of one another, that is exp(log(1+x)) = 1+x and log(exp(x))=x?
