Assignment 2 - Due Thursday 9/20/2001
I'm afraid I was over-optimistic about the amount of material I thought we would cover for Assignment 1. We are beginning section 18.3 of Simmons on Wednesday 9/12 and it is not fair to have you handing in questions on it the next day. I have decided to make the four questions on Assignment 1 from section 18.3 due as part of this assignment, not Assignment 1.

Read: Simmons, Sections 17.1, 1.6, 2.2
In Section 17.1 some of the examples make use of the derivative, and you should ignore the paragraphs where the derivative appears, because we haven't done it yet. Omit the whole of page 587 (the end of Example 1 and the whole of Example 2). Start reading again at Example 3 on page 588. Then skip the first method of doing Example 5 on page 589.
In Section 17.1 you are not supposed to remember or be able to recognize immediately the parametric equations in the examples (except perhaps the easiest cases like certain circles and ellipses). What you are supposed to learn is
- familiarity with the concept of parametrizing curves,
- how to go about sketching curves given parametrically,
- how to convert from parametric equations to regular equations, and vice-versa,
- the general mathematical behavior of parametrization.
Although sections 17.2-17.4 are listed on the schedule, they use the derivative and we are going to postpone them. The next thing we will do is to review basics about functions from Chapter 1 and then start on Chapter 2. I have put down section 1.5 in the schedule. I imagine you will all be familiar with this; however, I may be wrong! If so, please let me know. If I am jumping over things which you are not sure about I need to know about it. Anyway, if you have time skim and review section 1.5.
